What is RAS? Recirculating aquaculture explained

A recirculating aquaculture system, or RAS, grows fish in tanks and treats the same water again and again. Instead of drawing new water and letting it flow away, the farm cleans the water and sends it back to the fish.

Cách hoạt động của vòng lặp

Water leaving the tanks carries four problems: solids, ammonia, carbon dioxide and a shortage of oxygen. Each treatment stage removes one of them.

  • Solids removal. A drum filter screens out faeces and uneaten feed. Settlers and protein skimmers take heavier and finer fractions.
  • Lọc sinh học. Bacteria in a biofilter turn toxic ammonia into nitrate.
  • Khử khí. A degassing tower strips CO₂ from the water.
  • Cung cấp oxy. Oxygen cones or aeration put oxygen back in.
  • Khử trùng. UV or ozone treats the water before it returns to the tanks.

A small share of water is replaced each day to control nitrate and make up for losses.

RAS, ponds and flow-through farms

RAS Ao Nuôi trồng nước chảy qua
Sử dụng nước Low, water is reused High, plus evaporation High, constant supply
Điều khiển Temperature and water quality controlled Depends on weather Depends on the source
Land Small footprint Large area Needs a reliable water source
Running needs Power, oxygen, trained staff Lower technology Lower technology

When RAS makes sense

  • Water is scarce or expensive to pump and discharge.
  • Land is limited or close to market.
  • The climate is wrong for the species, so temperature must be controlled.
  • Biosecurity matters and you want to control what enters the farm.
  • You want year-round production at a steady output.

Numbers from a working farm

A commercial indoor RAS in Sweden held tilapia and catfish water around 30 °C all year. Energy use was about 3.1 kWh per kg of tilapia and 0.8 kWh per kg of catfish, varying only about ±15% between seasons (Bergman et al. 2020). Power is the running cost that a pond does not have.

What RAS asks of you

A RAS depends on power, pumps and oxygen running all day. It needs trained staff, a backup plan for failures, and a design sized on the real feed load. Read Những kiến thức cơ bản về thiết kế hệ thống RAS next, or see our delivered farms.

UV and ozone are often compared as alternatives. They do different jobs. UV treats pathogens in the water flow. Ozone oxidises organics and colour. Many systems use both.

Two farms with the same tank volume can differ widely in cost. Volume is the easiest number to compare and the least useful. This guide explains which inputs set the budget, so you can judge any quote you receive.

A layout is only as good as the numbers behind it. Collect these before you ask any supplier for a design or a price. Missing a few is fine: send what you have and say what is unknown.
