RAS project planning checklist

A layout is only as good as the numbers behind it. Collect these before you ask any supplier for a design or a price. Missing a few is fine: send what you have and say what is unknown.

Trên trang này

1. The fish

  • Loài, and the life stages you will hold: broodstock, nursery, grow-out
  • Target annual output in tonnes
  • Harvest size and how often you want to harvest
  • Where fingerlings come from: bought in, or your own hatchery

2. The site

  • Site or building size, with a sketch if you have one
  • Existing building or tanks: photos, dimensions, ceiling height
  • Whether the floor can be dug for drains and sumps
  • Access for delivery and lifting

3. Water

  • Water source: well, municipal, river or sea
  • Độ mặn and any water analysis you have
  • How much new water you can draw each day
  • Where waste water and sludge go

4. Climate and power

  • Summer and winter temperatures at the site
  • Power supply: voltage, phase, and how reliable it is
  • Backup power: generator or none

5. The project

  • New build or upgrade
  • Target start date
  • Budget range, if you have one
  • Local permits you already know you need

Why output comes first

A design is worked in reverse: the harvest you want sets the standing biomass, the biomass and feeding rate set the peak daily feed, and the feed sizes every treatment stage (SRAC). That is why target output and harvest size head the list. Site temperatures come next: tilapia, for example, grow best at 27–29 °C, so a cold site needs heating in the plan (SRAC).

Species, target output and site size are enough to start. Send them through the contact form and we return a first layout, equipment list and flow balance in 3 days, free. Read how much a RAS costs to see how these inputs drive the budget.

A recirculating aquaculture system, or RAS, grows fish in tanks and treats the same water again and again. Instead of drawing new water and letting it flow away, the farm cleans the water and sends it back to the fish.

UV and ozone are often compared as alternatives. They do different jobs. UV treats pathogens in the water flow. Ozone oxidises organics and colour. Many systems use both.

Two farms with the same tank volume can differ widely in cost. Volume is the easiest number to compare and the least useful. This guide explains which inputs set the budget, so you can judge any quote you receive.
